Color Conquest: The Free Territory Strategy Game You Can't Put Down

Some strategy games ask for an hour of your evening. Color Conquest asks for sixty seconds — and then, almost every time, a second try immediately after the first.

The idea is simple enough to understand before your coffee finishes brewing: you control a small patch of territory in the corner of a colorful grid. Each turn, you pick one color. Every tile of that color connected to your territory instantly joins your side. Pick well, and your patch of the board balloons outward in one satisfying sweep. Pick carelessly, and you've handed the AI room to wall you in.

That's the whole rulebook. What makes it worth coming back to is everything that happens once you actually start playing it.

A Game of "I Could Have Won"

Color Conquest isn't a game you lose because you didn't understand the rules — you lose because the color that looked biggest wasn't the color that mattered. Grabbing the largest patch of tiles feels great in the moment, but it can leave your territory in a shape the AI immediately exploits, cutting off a much larger region you would have owned two moves later. The AI is playing the same board you are, actively hunting for the moves that expand its own reach and deny you yours.

That tension — biggest gain right now versus the shape that sets up your next three turns — is where the real game lives. It's also exactly the kind of decision that produces the single most effective hook in casual strategy games: the near-miss. Losing at 43% territory with a message like "you were only 7% away" doesn't feel like a loss so much as an invitation. You already know exactly what you'd do differently. So you play again.

Built to Reward Precision, Not Just Speed

Two systems push Color Conquest past "pick the biggest number every turn":

Combo. Chain together consecutive turns where your color choice actually captures new territory, and your multiplier climbs — ×2, ×3, ×4 and beyond, each one flashing across the board with its own visual hit. Choose a color that gains you nothing, and the streak resets. Combo rewards momentum, and momentum is what makes a good run feel good rather than just correct.

Perfect Move. Every turn has a mathematically best color to pick — the one that captures the most territory available to you right then. Find it, and the game tells you immediately: a flash, a distinct sound, a real score bonus. It's a small thing, but it's the difference between "I made a move" and "I made the move" — and chasing that feeling turn after turn is what turns a quick round into three quick rounds.

Two Board Sizes, One Fast Loop

Color Conquest ships with 6×6 for the fastest possible rounds and 8×8 for a slightly longer, higher-stakes match — both cap out around 30 turns, and most games are decided well before that. Whichever size you pick, a full round rarely runs past a minute and a half, and hitting Play Again takes about two seconds. That's deliberate: the entire design goal was a loop tight enough that "one more game" is always the easiest decision in the room.

A Leaderboard You Can Actually Trust

A lot of browser leaderboards are trivial to fake — inspect the network tab, change one number, submit. Color Conquest's isn't. The server never takes your word for your own score: it independently replays your exact match from the same random seed it generated at the start, using its own copy of the game engine, and calculates territory, combo, and Perfect Move count itself. What you see on the result screen is the same number the server just verified — which means the name sitting at #1 on the global leaderboard actually earned it.

    How to Play

    1. Choose a color next to your territory.
    2. Capture every connected tile of that color.
    3. Expand faster than the AI opponent.
    4. Chain captures to build your combo multiplier.
    5. Find the optimal move each turn for a Perfect Move bonus.
    6. Own more of the board than the AI when the turns run out to win.
